How to Start a Gratitude Journal
So you’re an entrepreneur, eh? You’ve got the drive, the ambition, and the ideas. But do you have the attitude of gratitude? Gratitude is essential for any entrepreneur who wants to be successful. That’s why I will tell you how to start a gratitude journal.

Step One: Choose Your Tools
There are many different ways to start a gratitude journal, but one of the simplest is to grab a notebook and start writing. You can use a digital app like Evernote or OneNote or even create a Gratitude Journal board on Pinterest. There are no rules, so use whatever method works best for you.
As for me, I am a bit old-fashioned and opt for a high-quality pen and dedicated journal.
Step Two: Choose Your Approach
Two of the more common gratitude journaling approaches are the timer and the dedicated number approach.
- Using a Timer. With this method, you set a timer for, let’s say, five minutes and simply write down everything you’re grateful for. Yes, everything. The big things and the little things. And when the timer goes off, stop writing. And that’s it!
- A Dedicated Number of Items. Here you commit to writing a specific number of items each time you journal. For example, write three things you are grateful for each time.
Either approach works. Use whichever resonates with you.
Step Three: Start Journaling!
Let it go and let it flow. No holding back—No one needs to see your gratitude journal. Allow yourself to be present. Feel the emotions. Enjoy the moment. Jot down what you are grateful for.
Examples Of Gratitude Journal Entries From Entrepreneurs
Here are a few examples from entrepreneurs just like you:
- I’m grateful for my mentor, who has always given me guidance and advice.
- I’m grateful for my team, who have helped me build my business from the ground up.
- I’m grateful for my customers, who have allowed me to turn my passion into a thriving business.
- I’m grateful for my suppliers, who have always provided me with the materials I need to produce my products.
- I’m grateful for my competition, who have pushed me to be the best I can be.
So whatever your reason for gratitude, express it in your journal! It’s the best way to change your state of mind.

Want To Take It Up A Notch?
Here’s a great way to level up your daily journaling. Once you are done writing a gratitude that you have, a good practice is to take a few minutes and read over what you’ve written and reflect on why those things made you happy. Powerful stuff!
Tips for Successful Gratitude Journaling
As an entrepreneur, there are plenty of things to be grateful for! Here are a few tips for successful gratitude journaling:

1. Schedule Time To Journal.
Set aside a specific time each day to write daily in your journal. You can do this first thing in the morning, right before bed, or whenever you have a free moment during the day. Find what works best for you, and stick with it!
I like to do mine first thing in the morning- it sets the tone for my entire day.
2. Retreat To Your 'Happy Place.'
Create a space for yourself where you can regularly go to focus without interruptions. Now it doesn’t have to be the same spot every time; however, there is something to be said for rituals.
I frequent a recliner in my bedroom for this kind of journaling.
3. Keep it short and sweet.
You don’t need to write War and Peace every day; jot down a few things you’re grateful for. A few sentences will do the trick.
4. Be specific.
Instead of writing “I’m grateful for my family,” try “I’m grateful for my husband’s support during this tough time.” The more specific you are, the more impactful your gratitude journal will be.
5. Be positive.
This is your gratitude journal, after all! So please focus on the good things in your daily life, no matter how small they seem.
6. Get creative.
If you’re feeling stuck, try thinking outside the box. Gratitude journaling doesn’t have to be all about words – translating thoughts that you have can be done by using pictures, drawings, or even gratitude stones. So get creative and have fun with it!
Sample Gratitude Prompts To Get You Started
So you’re experiencing a bit of writer’s block, ha. No worries, it happens to the best of us! Sometimes, if I’m really stuck, I’ll use prompts to jumpstart my gratitude journaling. So here are some of my favorite Gratitude Prompts for entrepreneurs:
- What are three things you’re grateful for from the past week?
- What is something good that happened today, no matter how small?
- Who is someone in your life to whom you’re grateful? Why?
- What are five things you’re grateful for from the past year?
- What are three goals you’re working towards, and what are three things you’re grateful for that will help you achieve those goals?
Another creative and more playful prompt is to use gratitude stones. I like the ones with different words on each stone. So randomly pick a stone and use the word on it to prompt your writing. Pretty cool stuff!

Gratitude Journaling FAQs
Gratitude journaling is all the rage these days, and for a good reason! Studies have shown that reflecting on what we’re grateful for can increase happiness and well-being. But if you’ve never tried gratitude journaling, you might have some questions about getting started. Here are answers to some of the most common gratitude journaling FAQs:

Q: What should I write in my gratitude journal?
A: Anything and everything that you’re grateful for! The point of gratitude journaling is to focus on the positive aspects, so don’t hold back. Include all the blessings you’re thankful for, like your health or a loving family, and small everyday blessings, like a delicious cup of coffee or a sunny day.
Q: How often should I write in my gratitude journal?
A: There’s no right or wrong answer to this question. Some people like to journal daily, while others prefer to do it once a week or even once a month. The important thing is to find a frequency that works for you and that you can stick with long-term. If you try to force yourself to journal every day but find that it quickly becomes a chore, it’s probably better to back off to a less frequent schedule.
Q: Do I need to buy a particular gratitude journal?
A: Nope! You can use any notebook or even just a blank sheet of paper. Plenty of gratitude journals are available online or in stores if you want something more fun or creative. But at the end of the day, it’s really up to you. So use whatever will help you best express your gratitude.
Q: What if I can't think of anything to be grateful for?
A: If you’re struggling to find things to be thankful for, try using prompts (like the ones listed above) to jumpstart your journaling. You can also try brainstorming with a friend or family member. But ultimately, remember that gratitude is all about perspective. So if you’re having a tough day, think about the things in your life that are constant sources of happiness, no matter what else is going on. Those are the things you should be grateful for.
